Show Pigs : Resource

Ideal Pig age for Fair

Most market show pigs do best when they are:

👉 5 to 7 months old (approximately 150–290+ lbs depending on fair rules)

This age range usually gives:

* Good muscle development
* Manageable size for exhibitors
* Enough time for proper training and feeding programs

CHECK YOUR DATES

Here’s a list of our local fairs—take a look at your fair dates to be sure you’re choosing a pig that will fit your target show.

🐖 How to Pick the Right Show Pig

When you’re picking out your show pig, here’s what I want you to look for:

✔️ Start with your fair date

First, make sure the pig will fit your fair.

  • Know your fair date.
  • Make sure the pig will be the right age and weight by then.
  • If you’re unsure, ask me and I will help match you with the right pig.

🧍‍♂️ Watch how the pig is built

I want you to really look at structure:

  • The back should be level, not dipped or humped.
  • The pig should stand wide and square on all four legs.
  • Feet and legs should be strong, not weak or shaking.
  • The pig should walk freely without limping.

If a pig looks like it struggles to walk or stands narrow and weak, don’t pick that one.

💪 Look for muscle and balance

You are not just picking the biggest pig — you are looking for the right kind of pig.

Choose pigs that:

  • have muscle in the ham and shoulder
  • are wide through their body
  • look balanced from front to back
  • look strong, not fat or sloppy

Think athletic, powerful, and smooth.

😊 Pay attention to temperament

You’re going to spend a lot of time with this pig, so temperament matters.

Look for pigs that:

  • are curious and alert
  • are not overly aggressive
  • are not terrified of everything
  • move easily when you step in the pen

A calm, friendly pig is much easier to train and show.

❤️ Check basic health

When you’re standing there looking at pigs, check:

  • eyes bright and clear
  • clean nose (no thick discharge)
  • shiny hair coat
  • breathing normal, not constant coughing
  • poop firm, not watery diarrhea
  • skin clean without big sores

If something looks off, ask me about it.

🗣 Ask questions

I always want you to feel comfortable with your choice.

Ask me:

  • what the pig is out of (sire/dam)
  • how fast it is growing
  • what feed it’s currently on
  • whether it’s better for May or June fairs
  • whether it’s a better fit for market or showmanship

🚫 What NOT to do

Don’t pick just because:

  • it’s the cutest one
  • it’s your favorite color
  • it’s the biggest in the pen
  • it’s the one that runs up first

Pick the pig that will do the job at your fair.

⭐ Final advice from me

Pick a pig that:

  • is structurally sound
  • is healthy
  • has the right age for your fair
  • has a good attitude

If you’re unsure, I am always happy to help guide you — that’s what I’m here for.
