๐Ÿ– Deworming Guide

๐Ÿ– Deworming (Worming) Guide - Why it matters, types of worm

โœ… Why worming is important

Pigs commonly pick up internal and external parasites from:

  • dirt pens
  • pasture
  • other pigs
  • contaminated feed or water

Worms steal nutrition. A pig may be eating plenty, but the worms take the feed before the pig can use it.

Without deworming, pigs can develop:

  • poor weight gain or weight loss
  • rough, dull hair coat
  • diarrhea
  • coughing (lungworms)
  • pot-bellied appearance
  • anemia (pale eyelids/gums)
  • low energy
  • higher feed costs with poor results

For show pigs, worms can mean:
๐Ÿ‘‰ not making weight or looking rough

For meat pigs, worms can mean:
๐Ÿ‘‰ slower growth and lower meat quality

๐Ÿงช Types of wormers (what they treat)

Here are the most common types youโ€™ll see for pigs:

1๏ธโƒฃ Fenbendazole

Brand names: Safe-Guardยฎ, Panacurยฎ
Forms: feed, pellets, paste, liquid
Treats:

  • roundworms
  • whipworms
  • lungworms
  • nodular worms

This is one of the most commonly used pig wormers.

2๏ธโƒฃ Ivermectin

Brand names: Ivomecยฎ, Noromectinยฎ
Forms: injectable or pour-on (many people use injectable under vet advice)
Treats:

  • internal worms
  • mites and lice (bonus)

Good choice if pigs are itching, rubbing, or shaking from mange mites or lice.

3๏ธโƒฃ Doramectin

Brand names: Dectomaxยฎ
Similar to ivermectin
Treats:

  • most internal worms
  • lice/mite control

Often used by breeders or vets.

4๏ธโƒฃ Pyrantel / Levamisole

Less common now but still used
Primarily internal roundworms

๐Ÿ“… How often should pigs be wormed?

This depends on housing and soil exposure, but a simple plan works for most families:

๐Ÿผ Weaned pigs (8โ€“12 weeks)

โœ”๏ธ Worm once after arrival (after they settle in)

๐Ÿท Growing pigs

โœ”๏ธ Worm every 30โ€“45 days

๐Ÿ– Show pigs

โœ”๏ธ Worm every 30 days
โœ”๏ธ Do final deworming 3โ€“4 weeks before fair

๐Ÿฅฉ Meat pigs

โœ”๏ธ Deworm at least twice during growing period
โœ”๏ธ DO NOT worm within the withdrawal time before butcher
(Always check the label for withdrawal days)

โš ๏ธ Withdrawal time (very important)

 Every wormer has a:
๐Ÿ‘‰ slaughter withdrawal period

This is how long you must wait after worming before butchering.

Always:

  • read the label
  • follow withdrawal days carefully
  • ask your vet or feed store if unsure

This keeps meat safe for your family.

๐Ÿ‘€ Signs your pig may need worming sooner

Call your breeder or vet and consider worming if you notice:

  • slow or no weight gain
  • ribs showing despite eating well
  • rough hair coat
  • persistent diarrhea
  • coughing without illness
  • scratching, rubbing, or bald patches (mites/lice)

๐Ÿ’ก Tips for successful worming

  •  weigh pig (or estimate) so dose is correct
  • treat all pigs in the pen at the same time
  • clean pens/bedding after worming
  • always provide fresh water
  • rotate wormer type occasionally to reduce resistance

๐Ÿฉบ Important note

This is general guidance. Exact product choice and dosing should follow:

  • label directions
  • veterinary advice when possible
