πŸ– Feed Schedule

πŸ₯£ Daily Feeding Guidelines - SHOW PIGS

🐷 8–12 weeks

  •   2–3 pounds/day
  • ~8–12 cups/day total
  • 18–20% protein starter/grower

πŸ– Grower stage (12–18 weeks)

  •   4–6 pounds/day
  • split into 2–3 feedings
  • 16–18% protein feed

πŸ›’ Finishing stage (18 weeks to fair)

  •  adjust feed based on show goals
  • usually 4–7+ pounds/day
  • often 14–16% protein

πŸš€ If your pig needs to GAIN FASTER

 (behind on weight)

  • 6–7+ lbs feed/day
  • higher protein (18–20%)
  • add one midday feeding if possible
  • keep pig cool & comfortable (heat slows gain)

βš–οΈ If your pig is right on track

  •  4–6 lbs feed/day
  • 16–18% protein
  • 2 feedings/day
  • consistent routine

🐒 If your pig is getting TOO HEAVY

  •  3–4 lbs/day
  • lower protein (14–16%)
  • add exercise/training time
  • avoid lots of treats/corn
  • no free-choice feed

Never starve a pig. Just slow the gain, don’t stop feeding.

πŸ•˜ Example Feed Schedule (simple)

 Morning

  • half the day’s feed
  • fresh water
  • 5–10 min walking/training

Evening

  • other half of feed
  • fresh water
  • 5–10 min exercise

🧰 β€œMake weight / hold weight” tricks

 If pig is trending overweight:

  • switch to lower protein 14–16%
  • add soaked beet pulp for β€œfullness” without fast gain
  • give more exercise time
  • keep cool (heat stress causes weight loss swings)
  • feed 3 smaller meals instead of 2 big ones

If pig is underweight:

  • bump feed gradually by ½–1 lb/day
  • add an extra small feeding
  • keep pig warm and stress-free
  • ensure constant water (no water = no gain)

πŸ‘€ Weigh often β€” this is the real secret

 Weigh your pig:

  • every 1–2 weeks early on
  • every 3–4 days the last month

Adjust feed based on growth:

  • gaining too fast β†’ reduce slightly
  • not gaining enough β†’ increase slightly

πŸ”š Last 2–3 weeks before fair

This is where you β€œfine tune”:

  • calculate expected gain carefully
  • adjust feed DAILY if needed
  • avoid big changes (slow = safe)

❀️ Final advice I’d give any family

The pig that wins is rarely the one that got the most feed β€” it’s the one that was managed and monitored.

Consistent:

  • feed
  • water
  • weighing
  • training
    = success πŸ†
